Ceramic are minerals that have been hardened permanently through firing at a temperature. They are made with a mixture of clay and other chemical substances. In this stage, the clay beads are cleaned up with a damp sponge so that the surface remains smooth. They are then placed in a kiln and heated at 1101 Celsius. After being heated up in such a high temperature, they are left to be cooled in the kiln. The final stage that the beads undergo is the glazing method. Under this method, each and every bead is colored and painted. They are given 2 coats of underglazed colors and 2 coats of clear glaze. After this, the materials are left to dry. When the beads gets dried up, they are cleaned and holes are again made in them. For the last time they are again placed in the kiln for final heating.

The commonly used materials for making ceramic beads are stoneware, earthenware and porcelain. Earthenware is porous clay and is referred to as ceramic. The beads made from this type of clay are usually glazed, which gives them beautiful designs and colors and makes them highly durable. This type of clay has a high percentage of iron and other minerals and thus is heated at a low temperature. The color of the fired earthenware ranges from red and tan to black. Stoneware is not so porous like earthenware. It is opaque and is fired at high temperatures. Fired stoneware’s color ranges from light gray and dark gray to buff. Porcelain, on the other hand, is dense and is white colored. It becomes translucent when heated at a high temperature. The finished material comes up with a smooth surface.

In the primitive days, the ceramic beads were made by rolling dampened earth bits into shape and then making holes into them with a stick. Then they were laid out under the sun to dry. It was later discovered that firing the clay at high temperatures made the clay beads more tough and durable. With firing the color of the clay beads also appeared to change. They were painted with natural pigments initially but when it was seen that these colors started to fade over time, liquid glazes gained popularity.
